000 ABPZ30 KNHC 011425 TWSEP Monthly Tropical Weather Summary NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL 800 AM PDT Sun Sep 1 2024 For the eastern North Pacific, east of 140 degrees west longitude: Five named storms formed in the eastern Pacific basin during the month of August, one of which became a major hurricane (Gilma). In addition, Carlotta, which formed on the last day of July, became a hurricane in August. The formation of five tropical cyclones is above the long-term (1991-2020) August average of 3 or 4 named storms forming in the month, with 2 becoming hurricanes, and one becoming a major hurricane. Despite the increased activity this past month, the season to date Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE), which measures the combined strength and duration of tropical storms and hurricanes, is about 65-70 percent of the long-term (1991-2020) average.
