NHC on Social Media
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is active on social media to help decision makers and the public receive notifications of the latest hazardous tropical weather systems, to enhance its traditional outreach and education programs, and in very limited cases, to interact with users. More information on NHC Facebook, Instagram, X, and YouTube accounts can be found below.
Facebook
https://www.facebook.com/NWSNHC
The NHC Facebook page covers a variety of topics including tropical cyclone products and services, education, and outreach. During the hurricane season, updates are provided using NHC products on active tropical cyclones and potential development areas of interest. Live video updates are provided for tropical cyclones that pose a significant threat to land. An announcement regarding the live broadcast will be sent 30 minutes before it goes live.
Instagram

Like NHC’s Facebook account, the NHC Instagram account covers a variety of topics including tropical cyclone products and services, education, and outreach. During the hurricane season, updates are provided using NHC products on active tropical cyclones and potential development areas of interest. Live video updates are provided for tropical cyclones that pose a significant threat to land. An announcement regarding the live broadcast will be sent 30 minutes before it goes live.
X
The NHC has five X accounts that serve different purposes as described below.
Outreach/Special Messages
@NWSNHC
This account is the broadest in scope of NHC’s X accounts and serves as our primary mechanism for engaging the public and our partners. This account will cover general topics such as education and outreach, NWS products and policies concerning tropical cyclones, significant events, or just fun facts – from across all of the branches that comprise NHC. Announcements regarding live video updates for tropical cyclones that pose a significant threat to land are shared on this account.
Hurricane Specialist Unit Operations
@NHC_Atlantic and @NHC_Pacific
These two accounts are the primary outlets for real-time, operational information or announcements regarding active tropical cyclones and disturbances in the Atlantic (@NHC_Atlantic) and eastern and central Pacific (@NHC_Pacific) basins. In addition to the automated tweets that are generated whenever a Public Advisory (TCP) or Tropical Cyclone Update (TCU) has been issued, these accounts will be used to share Key Messages for active tropical cyclones and highlight systems of interest and their development potential from the Tropical Weather Outlook. Because these accounts are primarily manned by the Hurricane Specialists on shift, we will be unable to respond to questions or otherwise interact with users on these accounts. Outside of hurricane season, @NHC_Atlantic and @NHC_Pacific will be used to announce the release of Tropical Cyclone Reports and highlight other activities of the Hurricane Specialist Unit.
Storm Surge
@NHC_Surge
This account enhances NHC storm surge forecasts by providing real-time reports and observations during a tropical cyclone event, resources permitting. The feed will enhance preparedness and outreach efforts throughout the year, and provide news and announcements on updates to the SLOSH modeling system and storm surge decision support tools.
Tropical Analysis and Forecast Branch
@NHC_TAFB
The Tropical Analysis and Forecast Branch (TAFB), an operational unit of NHC, is responsible for issuing more than 100 marine products daily covering millions of square miles of the Atlantic and eastern Pacific Ocean. This account highlights significant marine weather events and outreach programs provided by TAFB.
NWS Honolulu Forecast Office
@NWSHonolulu
The Central Pacific Hurricane Center (CPHC) is co-located with the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Honolulu. This account highlights weather events affecting Hawaii and outreach programs provided by the CPHC and Honolulu Forecast office. Real-time, operational information or announcements regarding active tropical cyclones and disturbances in the central Pacific Ocean is available via the @NHC_Pacific account.
YouTube
https://www.youtube.com/user/NWSNHC
The NHC YouTube channel houses a library of content that includes video updates and briefings on tropical cyclones and marine weather, recorded webinars, and a variety of outreach and educational videos. During an active tropical cyclone that poses a significant threat to land, live video updates from an NHC expert are streamed here and shared on other NHC social media platforms.
NHC Blog: “Inside the Eye”
https://noaanhc.wordpress.com/
“Inside the Eye” is the official blog of NHC. The blog augments NHC outreach efforts and allows staff to share posts on topics related to tropical cyclones, marine weather, and NHC products and services.
